Profound Autism

Profound Autism refers to autistic individuals who have significant intellectual and communication challenges, requiring 24/7 support. The Lancet Commission first proposed the term "Profound Autism" in their December 2021 report. This new classification highlights the distinct needs of this population, giving families, advocates, and providers a way to describe the unique needs of this group.

A Clearer Path Forward

A new, consensus-based research definition for Profound Autism was introduced at the 2025 INSAR Annual Meeting. This long-needed clarity is a first step in making sure that people with Profound Autism are accurately represented in research—and no longer excluded from the science that shapes their care. Thank you to the Profound Autism Alliance and the Autism Science Foundation for supporting this vital effort.
