For most people with Profound Autism, access to appropriate health care remains a major barrier. Profoundly Autistic people face difficulties such as limited communication abilities, sensory sensitivities, and behavioral needs that complicate routine medical visits and can lead to unmet health needs. Despite this, there is a striking lack of research that specifically examines medical issues in people with Profound Autism, leaving clinicians with limited evidence to guide care. Importantly, autism itself is a risk factor for poorer health outcomes due to increased vulnerability, reduced access to preventive services, and higher rates of co-occurring conditions. More focused research and improved medical systems are urgently needed to address the health disparities experienced by this population.
